Petrol price hike: Delhi govt may provide relief to peopleChief Minister Sheila Dikshit today indicated that her government may provide some relief to Delhiites from the hike in petrol prices. "Wait till Monday for my budget," Dikshit, who also handles Finance portfolio, told reporters when asked whether her government was planning to provide some relief to people from petrol price hike. Dikshit had last night indicated that Delhi government may consider cutting taxes on petrol to provide some relief from the hike in fuel price. "We will see what we can do," she had told reporters in Jammu yesterday when asked whether her government will reduce VAT on petrol. In the steepest-ever increase, petrol price have been increased by Rs 7.50 a litre. The Chief Minister, however, justified the steep hike saying oil companies were incurring huge losses and the hike was necessary. She was on a private visit to Jammu. In a bid to give some relief from the steep petrol price increase, Kerala and Uttarakhand governments have waived tax on the additional amount to bring down the fuel price by up to 25 per cent of the hike.

'This will cost the exchequer Rs.218 crore,' Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told reporters here. 'I have also written to the prime minister, UPA chairperson and petroleum minister, saying that the hike will affect the people badly.' He said the petrol price in Kerala, after the cabinet decision, will come down by Rs.1.63 per litre. A litre of petrol here will now cost Rs.74.11. (IANS)

Congress asks other states to reduce tax on petrolTaking a tough stand and setting an 'uncomfortable' precedent, the governments of Kerala and Uttarakhand on Thursday waived tax on the hiked amount thereby reducing the hike rate by 25 per cent. The Congress welcomed the decision of the two state governments to cushion the impact of the fuel hike even as the hike of Rs 7.54 per litre of petrol continued to fuel public anger across the country. The Congress leaders asked other states to follow Kerala and Uttarakhand. "Certain state governments have already taken the lead in rationalising the state taxes on petrol, that is indeed a welcome measure. We do hope that others will follow," Congress spokesman Manish Tewari told reporters in Delhi. Compared to other States, petrol prices will be down by Rs 1.63 per litre and Rs 1.87/litre respectively in Congress-led UDF-ruled Kerala and BJP-ruled Uttarakhand. "UDF government does not justify the Centre's decision to increase prices. But we are committed to bringing some relief to people so reducing the sales tax on petrol. With this decision, petrol price will come down by Rs 1.63 per litre," Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told reporters in Thiruvananthapuram after a special cabinet meeting. Stating that Kerala would stand to lose Rs 218 crore through the decision, he said the state had already asked the Centre to reconsider the petrol price hike. "The government has also decided to introduce austerity measures and to check use of petrol by government offices," the Chandy said. The Uttarakhand government decided to waive VAT on the increased amount at a state Cabinet meetingin Dehra Dun late night on Wednesday, official sources said.

Petrol price in Delhi has been hiked by Rs 7.54 per litre to Rs 73.18 a litre. In Mumbai it will cost Rs 78.57 per litre as against Rs 70.66 a litre. In Kolkata, Rs 77.88 per litre and Chennai Rs 77.53 a litre. Earlier in the day, the Uttarakhand government decided to waive off VAT on the increased amount, providing a relief of Rs 1.87 per litre to the people of the state.
