Megha Vakharia in last eight stage

April 02, 2003 19:32 IST

Sixth seed Megha Vakharia of India brushed aside a determined challenge from Cheli Bargil of Israel to storm into the quarter-finals in the CCI-ITF $10,000 women's Futures tennis tournament in Mumbai on Wednesday.

The Indian won 7-5, 7-5.

Vakharia, who is ranked 579 in the Women's Tennis Association list, came up with an impressive performance and was appropriately rewarded for her effort.

Overall, it was a day of mixed fortunes for Indians, with seventh seed Radhika Tulpule being one of the biggest casualties. The Pune girl went down in straight sets to Zsuzanna Babos of Hungary 2-6, 2-6.

Second seed Rushmi Chakravarthy came up with an inspired performance to oust Diana Julianto of Indonesia 6-1, 6-4 to enter the quarter-finals.
