Carl Lewis arrested after car accident

April 22, 2003 10:17 IST

Olympic gold medallist Carl Lewis was on Monday arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol after he crashed his car on a Los Angeles freeway, police said.

California Highway Patrol officers who arrived at the scene of the one-car accident at 2:40 am PDT (5:40 am EDT) noticed that the champion sprinter seemed intoxicated, a CHP spokeswoman said.

Lewis was not injured in the crash, the spokeswoman said.

The officers took Lewis to a nearby police station where he submitted to an alcohol breath test and was picked up by a friend. The result of the test was not made public.

Lewis, who is considered one of the greatest track athletes of the modern era, won 10 Olympic medals, 9 of them gold, and set a series of world records before retiring from the sport in the late 1990s.
