Gurmail Singh gives EME victory

Forward Gurmail Singh's brace helped EME, Jalandhar, sideline Sikh Regiment Centre 3-2 in their last quarter-final league match in Pool 'B' in the 41st Bombay Gold Cup hockey tournament at the Mahindra stadium in Mumbai on Thursday.

EME took the lead three minutes from the breather when Gurmail Singh scored off A K Bhatti's centre.

SRC equalised in the 45th minute when their centre-half Suman Kumar flicked home an M Tirkey pass.

Ten minutes later they took the lead for the first time when Baljit Singh converted the third penalty-corner.

But speedy forward Gurmail Singh equalised for EME in the 68th minute off an Avtar Singh (junior) pass and in the very next minute skipper Avtar Singh senior converted their fifth penalty-corner to score the match-winner.

In the second match from Pool 'B', star-studded Indian Airlines, Delhi, outplayed Western Railway, Mumbai, 5-3 after being held 2-2 at half-time.

However, both the teams made it to the last four stage, Indian Airlines keeping their slate clean by winning all their three quarter-final league matches.

The airmen shot into the lead in the seventh minute when international Mukesh Kumar converted their second penalty-corner. Seven minutes later Western Railway equalised when their defender Sunil Singh converted their second penalty-corner.

With ten minutes to go for the breather Western took the lead for the first time when their skipper Chandrapal scored a field goal but three minutes later Airlines' Arjun Halappa restored parity when he converted the fourth penalty- corner.

Indian Airlines increased the lead in the 49th minute when Sameer Dad converted their sixth penalty-corner and then Vikram Pillay and the mercurial Dhanraj Pillay scored two field goals in the space of two minutes to make it 5-2.

With just six minutes to go the final hooter, Chandrapal narrowed the margin with a field goal.
