Top seed Bopanna shocked

Indian Davis Cupper Rohan Bopanna was shocked by unseeded Jasper Smit of The Netherlands in the pre-quarter-finals in the $10,000 MSLTA-ITF Futures tennis tounament at the Dr Ranade Centre in Mumbai on Wednesday.

The top seed lost 6-7(4-7), 0-6.

Harsh MankadAnother Indian Davis Cupper, second seed Harsh Mankad rallied magnificently after dropping the first set 5-7 to get the better of qualifier Murad Inoyatov of Uzbekistan 5-7, 7-5, 6-0 in two hours 14 minutes.

Giant-killer and Indian wild card Somdev Dev Varman, who had accounted for the third seed Aisam Qureshi of Pakistan in the earlier round yesterday, sidelined another wild card, Karan Rastogi, winning 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 in two hours and 25 minutes on way to the last eight stage.

Another unseeded Indian Ajay Ramaswami caused a mild flutter when he ousted eighth seed Michael Ouvarov of Great Britain 6-3, 7-6(7-2) in one hour and 18 minutes.

Also moving into the quarter-finals were seventh seed Mustafa Ghouse, fifth seed Sunil Kumar Sipaeya and unseeded Vinod Sridhar (all from India) and lucky loser Sarvar Ikramov of Uzbekistan.

Local lad Ghouse sidelined qualifier Adrian Gavrila of Romania 6-3, 6-3 while Sipaeya subdued another qualifier, Eduard Khan of Uzbekistan, winning 6-4, 6-1 in one hour ten minutes.

Sridhar overcame his compatriot and wild card Vishal Punna 6-2, 6-3 in 58 minutes while Ikramov beat qualifier Dmitriy Makeyev of Kazakistan 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 35 minutes.
