India juniors shock Dynamo Kiev

July 22, 2003 16:03 IST

Indian football has much to cheer about. While East Bengal came up with a stunner in Jakarta on Monday, beating Indonesian league runners-up Persita Tangerang 2-1 to storm into the semi-finals of the ASEAN club football championship,  the India Under-18 team did as well to shock fancied Dynamo Kiev 2-1 in the Milk Cup qualifiers in Northern Ireland.

The young Indian team, coached by Stephen Constantine, took the lead in the 20th minute through Tata Football Academy player Vimal Periyer. But the Euro giants, boasting of some of the world's best youth players, went all out into attack thereafter and restored parity a little before half-time.

However, the Indian side had other ideas. Bengal defender Habib Rehman Mondal, also of Tata FA, got the match-winner from a set-piece, to fashion a memorable win for the country, at the Rugby Avenue Stadium in Coleraine.

National coach Constantine was instrumental in getting the Indian team an invitation for the tournament.

India next plays County Antrim in their last league match.

Earlier, on Saturday India under-18 lost to England's Preston North end via a hotly disputed penalty.

All the matches are of 70 minutes duration.
