Ref banned for disallowing goal

March 01, 2003 16:11 IST

A German assistant referee has been suspended until further notice for disallowing a valid goal in an ill-tempered 2-2 Bundesliga draw between Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund at the weekend.

The German Football Associaton (DFB) said in a statement on Thursday that linesman Harry Ehing would no longer officiate for the time being after wrongly signalling offside when Schalke defender Tomasz Waldoch hit the back of the net with 10 minutes remaining.

Each side had a man sent off in Saturday's match, which was marred by many controversial scenes.

Schalke were reduced to 10 when striker Victor Agali received his marching orders in the 38th minute for elbowing Dortmund midfielder Dede.

Dortmund goalkeeper Jens Lehmann later followed him off for a heated exchange with team mate Marcio Amoroso, whom he held responsible for Waldoch's disallowed effort.
