Advani easily wins opener

November 17, 2003 21:58 IST

Teen sensation Pankaj Advani began his campaign in the World Billiards Championship in style, beating John Hartely of England 150-53, 150-69, 150-56 in the opening league match in Hyderabad on Monday.

The in-form Advani, who is eyeing a grand double after being crowned World amateur snooker champion last month, gave no chance to his Group-E opponent.

The Bangalore-based cueist started with an opening break of 41 but could not cash in on it in his subsequent visits. But his English opponent too was a bit shaky.

Advani then struck form with unfinished break of 77 to win the first frame in the 150-up format, which was employed for the first time in the flag-ship event with a view to give equal opportunity to underdogs and also generate public interest in the game.

The 18-year-old then took full control of the match, recording breaks of 97 and 77 unfinished in the second and third frames respectively to douse all hopes of a fightback by the Englishman.
