Venkataraman shocked

September 09, 2003 20:46 IST

Qualifier Punam Reddy upset eighth seed Archana Venkataraman in a marathon encounter to move into the pre-quarter-finals of the Indian Oil Servo-ITF women's Futures tournament in Bangalore on Tuesday.

Punam won 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (7-3) after two-and-half hours at the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association courts.

Punam started off in whirlwind fashion, pocketing the first set easily but found the going tough in the next two as Archana tightened up her game after a tentative start.

But in the end, it was Punam who held her nerve to carve out a memorable victory.

Barring the result, there were no surprises.

Top seed Suchanan Viratprasert from Thailand moved up, whipping India's Madhura Ranganathan 6-0, 6-0, while second seed Malaysian Chin-Bee Khoo also had no difficulty as she thrashed another Indian, Chirshathi Rajur, 6-0, 6-1.

Rushmi Chakravarthi, seeded number three, was tested in the second set but managed to defeat compatriot Parul Goswami 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

Others who went through to the round of 16 today were fourth seed Megha Vakharia, fifth seed Isha Lakhani, sixth seed Sai Jayalakshmi Jayaram and seventh seed Sonal Phadke.
