Jaspal Rana claims eight golds

April 06, 2004 21:00 IST

Pistol shooter Jaspal Rana finished with a rich haul of eight gold medals, including three in indivudual events, to bolster India's medal tally to 26 gold, nine silver and seven bronze medals at the end of the shooting competition in the ninth SAF Games in Islamabad on Tuesday.

Pakistan and Bangladesh ended with two gold medals each.

It was total domination by the Indian shooters, without their top stars including Anjali Vedpathak and Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, and Rana (571) again underlined it by winning the 25m Standard Pistol event.

Samresh Jung picked the silver with a total of 570 but Ashok Pandit lost the bronze medal to Pakistans Kashif Riaz.

Both Pandit and Riaz totaled 559 but the Pakistani pipped his rival on better last shot.

In the team event, the Indian trio went on to equal the Games mark of 1700, set by India in Kathmandu in 1999, to claim the gold medal.

Pakistan (1648 points) and Bangladesh (1576) finished with the silver and bronze respectively.
