Indian eves thrash Azerbaijan

October 28, 2004 12:16 IST

Koneru Humpy and S Vijayalakshmi guided the Indian eves to an emphatic 2.5-0.5 victory over Azerbaijan in the 12th round of the 36th chess Olympiad now in progress in Mallorca at Gran Casino.

Both the players had little trouble getting past their Azerbaijani opponents, while Nisha Mohota drew on the third board to complete the victory.

However, it seems that even this big victory will not bring Indians any closer to the medal positions as Georgia defeated China 2-1 and Russia overwhelmed Slovenia 3-0.

With just two rounds to go, the Chinese are still in the sole lead on 27 points. They are followed by Georgia and the United states on 24.

Russia and France are in joint-fourth position with 23.5 points. The Indian women stand sixth on 23.

In the next round, India plays China. They need a handsome win to further their hopes of securing a medal.
