India archers emerge champions

November 11, 2006 20:06 IST

India emerged champions in the second Commonwealth Archery championship in Jamshedpur on Saturday bagging five gold, two silver and one bronze medals.

Out of the eight gold medals at stake in the competition, India came up trumps in recurve and compound individual women, recurve and compound team event and recurve men's team event. Australia and New Zealand finished second and third respectively.

The Australians grabbed gold in the compound men's team event and individual men's recurve section, whereas New Zealand secured gold in individual men's compound division to claim third spot.

England finished fourth with four silver and as many bronze medals.

The Indian dominance in the championship continued on Saturday with ace archer Jhanu Hansda and SAF Games gold medallist Dola Banerjee clinching gold in the individual women compound and recurve divisions respectively.

While Hansda shot with perfection to top with 111 points defeating her teammate Manjhudha Soy (103), Banerjee defeated England's Naomi Folkard in individual recurve women's section.

Athens Olympic bronze medallist Alison Williamson (England) finished third in the recurve while compatriot Linda Garner bagged the bronze with 111 points in the compound.

In the individual women's recurve division, Banerjee beat Naomi Folkard and Alison Williamson (both England) in a tie-breaker after they finished equal on 103 points.
