Pawar shocks top seed Anand November 16, 2006 18:16 IST Anand Pawar created a big ripple at the USD 10,000 Indian International Badminton Tournament when he knocked out top seeded compatriot Chetan Anand in straight games to enter the men's singles semi-finals in Mumbai on Thursday. Mumbai-based Pawar, son of former doubles national champion Uday and who is ranked almost 100 places below his fancied rival Anand, won 21-16, 21-19 in 45-minutes to set up a meeting with Korea's Cheol Ho Lee for a berth in the final. Pawar, ranked 128th as compared to Anand's world ranking of 30, dominated the encounter right through against an error-prone Anand in their quarterfinal clash. Giant-slayer Ajay Jayaram, another Mumbai player who had shocked Dane Peter Mikkelsen in the pre-quarter finals, bowed out in the next round but after giving Korean Lee, ranked 74th, a tough time in the quarterfinals Jayaram was defeated by Lee 21-10, 18-21, 21-18 in 45 minutes. The Indian led 8-7 in the final game before his rival took control and jumped to a 14-9 lead and never conceded that advantage till the end. The other semi-final pits 170th ranked Min Moon Jung of Korea, conqueror of Dane Michael Christiansen in the quarters, against Indian left-hander Nikhil Kanetkar, ranked 86th and who shut out another Korean shuttler Hun Dong Kim in straight games. Saina Nehwal was the only Indian left in the women's singles draw. The world junior runner-up easily got past the challenge of Ruth Misha, also of India, in straight games for a last four berth. Fourth seed Aditi Mutatkar and Jwala Gutta were eliminated by Korean rivals Hi Moon Kim and second seed Soo Young Jung respectively in the quarters. Hi Moon, ranked 113, rallied after losing the first game over extra points, to oust the 109th-ranked Aditi and set up a meeting with Saina for a place in the final.
