Bhupathi-Vizner triumph in Montreal

August 12, 2007 22:45 IST

Mahesh Bhupathi [Images] and Pavel Vizner, teaming up for the first time, completed a giant-killing run in Montreal by winning the Rogers Cup on Sunday.

The Indo-Czech duo cruised to a 6-4, 6-4 victory over fifth seeds Paul Hanley [Images] of Australia and Kevin Ullyett of Zimbabwe in the doubles final.

Bhupathi and Vizner had ousted fourth seeds Leander Paes [Images] and Martin Damm in the quarter-finals before scalping their biggest victims -- Mike and Bob Bryan-- in the semi-finals.

They saved two consecutive match points against the Bryans at in the match tie-break to beat the American twins 6-2, 4-6, 12-10.

After winning the first set of the final 6-4 in 38 minutes, Bhupathi and Vizner were gifted the break in the second-set when Ullyett served a double fault in the third game. The teams went on serve from there, as Bhupathi-Vizner closed it at 6-4.

This was Bhupathi's first title of the season. The Indian doubles specialist, who has won 10 Grand Slams, has not had a regular partner for two years. He decided to team up with Vizner after Radek Stepanek pulled out of the team to concentrate on his singles.
