Nandan Bal retained as Davis Cup coach

September 01, 2008 20:31 IST

Nandan Bal is to continue as India's Davis Cup coach as the All India Tennis Association on Monday named four-member support staff for the away Davis Cup tie against Romania later this month.

The AITA also retained Vece Paes as team's doctor while naming two trainers -- Shyamlal Vallabjee and Sanjay Singh -- for the tie.

SP Mishra has already been appointed as non-playing captain after Leander Paes [Images] stepped down as playing captain after the Beijing [Images] Olympics [Images].

Anil Khanna, Secretary General of AITA, insisted that no private coach or trainer of any player would be barred from travelling with the team but they will not be allowed to interfere in the team's official proceedings.

"Personal trainers and coaches are welcome but they will not be allowed to interfere in team's official training. If their presence is required in the team's dressing room, SP Mishra will have the right to decide on the matter," he said.

If India can manage to beat Romania in the crucial tie, they will enter the World Group after a decade.

AITA had earlier announced a four-member team comprising Leander paes, Mahesh Bhupathi [Images], Prakash Amritraj and Somdev Devvarman for the clay court tie.

Meanwhile AITA at its Annual General Meeting (AGM), held in Goa [Images] on Saturday, elected Yashwant Sinha as its president and Khanna as Secretary General for the 2008-2012 term.

Bharat N Oza has been elected as Honorary Joint Secretary and Prof T D Francis as Honorary Treasurer while S M Krishna was elected as Life President. AITA also elected eight honorary Vice Presidents for the term.

Eleven executive Committee members for the term of 2008-09 were also elected.
