'I used live instruments like shehnai, Indian classical violin, flute and percussion'

How important is melody while composing for films?

Melody is one thing I concentrate on. Fast songs hit you fast but fade out fast too. Melody stays longer.

Could you talk about the music you have composed?

Anish wanted something original. Normally directors give some references to music and tell music directors they want something similar or different. Here I was not given any reference. Anish said 'let's create something.' I listened to lots of Telugu music. Since the movie was set in a village I had to research quite a bit.

I had to concentrate on melody and instrumentation. Since some were montage songs they had to have the feel of the story and so melody had to be there.

You have not used the saxophone and clarinet in the compositions…

Yes, I didn't want to forcibly use these two musical instruments. I have used the wooden sax in one song. Otherwise, I used live instruments like shehnai, Indian classical violin, flute and percussion. So it's a fusion.
