Karnataka asks US firm to study its economy

The Karnataka government has approved the "Harvard Institute for International Development", a US-based consulting agency, to prepare a comprehensive report on the state's financial sectors for improving the economy.

Information Minister M C Nanaiah told the media at a post-cabinet briefing that the agency would go into various sectors including state-owned undertakings, electricity board, taxes, foreign investment and also into the state's overall economic status. It would suggest ways for improving infrastructure besides social sectors like primary health and education and mobilising resources for such projects.

Nanaiah said the cabinet also approved the appointment of a committee headed by Deputy Chief Minister P G Siddaramaiah to go into the reservation policy on promotion of engineers working in various government departments. The committee, which was appointed following the state-wide strike by the engineers protesting against the present policy, would submit its report within ten days, he added.
