All major ports and important cities to be interlinked with expressways: Thambi Durai

The Centre will embark on a Rs 200 billion port-to-port roadlink programme covering all the major ports and important cities in the country, according to Union Surface Transport Minister M Thambi Durai.

Addressing the media in Bombay, the minister said a national expressway authority would be set up for executing the project and the nationwide network's future operations.

He said the expressways will cover a vast network -- Bombay-Ahmedabad-Kandla-Delhi-Calcutta- Paradeep-Vizag-Madras-Tuticorin-Cochin-Mangalore- Bombay.

All these cities will be further connected to other major cities and satellite towns to ensure speedy traffic.

Road infrastructure to handle incoming and outgoing cargo will be given a thrust by the government, he said.

He said a Cabinet note has been prepared in this regard.
