The Indian Railways have signed an agreement with General Motors of the USA to upgrade the technology for manufacturing 4,000 horsepower diesel locomotives indigenously.

The engines will be used for faster movement of freight and passenger traffic.

In collaboration with GM, the latest technogy was being purchased and transferred for manufacturing such locomotives as part of the government's strategy to modernise the entire railway system in the country.

Meanwhile, the technology provided by ABB has been absorbed in the Chittaranjan Locomotive Works in West Bengal for manufacturing 6,000 horsepower, four-phase electric locomotives.

The railways have decided to import light-weight coaches made of stainless steel from Germany and later transfer the technology for manufacturing such coaches to the Kapurthala Coach Factory in Punjab. Besides, the signalling and the telecommunication networks were also being upgraded to ensure better safety in the movement of trains, offcial sources said.
