NSE-50 Index

Nifty declines by 1.25 points

Pivotals moved in a narrow range on the National Stock Exchange following a lack of buying support from foreign institutional investors and leading market players.

Mirroring the trend, the NSE-50 Index opened at 1085.75 points, touched the day's high of 1096.05 points, and declined to the day's low of 1071.20. The Nifty later ended at 1084.00 points, showing a marginal loss of 1.25 points over the previous close of 1085.25 points.

The Midcap Index drifted lower by 7.85 points to 1238.15 points against the previous close of 1246.00 points.

The total turnover on the NSE reported during the day was at Rs 12.8 billion.

ITC stood first in the list of turnover by registering the highest turnover of Rs 4.5 billion, followed by Reliance Rs 3.6 billion, SBI Rs 1.2 billion, Tata Tea Rs 825.2 million and MTNL Rs 409.9 million.

Hectic activity was observed at the other counters like TELCO Rs 268.3 million, L&T Rs 251 million, Hind Lever Rs 224.3 million, TISCO Rs 205.6 million, ACC Rs 141.9 million, Castrol Rs 128 million, BHEL Rs 99.9 million, Bajaj Auto Rs 59.5 million, LML Rs 55.6 million, Bank of Baroda Rs 45.2 million, Hero Honda Rs 39.4 million, Rel Petro Rs 30.2 million, VSNL Rs 30 million, Infosys Tech Rs 28.8 million, Satyam Comp Rs 27.6 million, ICICI Rs 27.6 million, Softsolint Rs 27.1 million, Digital Equip Rs 24.8 million, Ponds Rs 23 million and Glaxo Rs 22.7 million.

Among the top five gainers, TELCO gained by 2.63 per cent to Rs 327.30, TVS Suzuki up by 2.46 per cent to Rs 421.50, Guj Amb Cem increased by 2.21 per cent to Rs 293.40, Hind Lever by 1.49 per cent to Rs 1301.60 and ITC Ltd improved further by 1.24 per cent to Rs 569.45.

Among the major losers, IPCL lost by 6.94 per cent to Rs 97.15, Thermax down by 4.13 per cent to Rs 245, Grasim decreased by 3.93 per cent to Rs 314, GE Ship declined by 2.12 per cent to Rs 46.10 and Essar Steel moved down by 2.04 per cent to Rs 21.60.
