Market@May 5: Day's report

The markets opened strong and steadily moved northward. Values remained firm throughout the day. As a result of strong buying interest, almost all the software stocks managed to cross the 8 per cent upper limit and a large number of stocks closed at the 12 per cent limit.

Sensex was up 142 points at 4695. Nifty up 37 points at 1418.

The pharma sector was also buoyant. Pivotals were in good demand. Reliance was the only counter which failed to show a positive close. Satyam Computer, Zee Tele, Reliance, Infosys and Himachal topped the volume chart, accounting for 54 per cent of the total traded volumes on the BSE.

Gainers: Between 5 per cent and 7.9 per cent
HLL, Reliance Capital, ICICI, Siemens, Hughes Soft, Padmini Poly, Polaris, Hoechst, Max India, ITC Bhadra, Veronica Lab, Glenmark Pharma, VLS Finance, Nalco, Mirc Electronics, Tube Investments, Vikas WSP, Apar Ind, Tata Finance.

Losers: Between 12 per cent and 7.9 per cent
Grasim, Denim Enterprises, Indian Hotels, AgrEvo, Invest Trust, Shaw Wallace, Jayant Agro.

Losers: Between 7.9 per cent and 5 per cent
HPCL, Zuari Ind, TVS Srichakra, Eveready, Pantaloon.
