The Railway rupee: where it comes from, where it goes

Nearly half of every rupee earned by the Indian Railways is consumed by its employees in the form of salaries and other dues whereas a meagre one paisa is spent on development works.

As per the Union Railway Budget 2000-01 tabled in Parliament on Monday, from every rupee earned during 1999-2000, the railways spent 37 paise towards staff wages and other allowances whereas pension fund outgo consumed another 11 paise.

Only one paisa was used for development fund during the year while a similar amount was accounted for by capital fund.

The other major outgo for railways during the year under review was fuel which accounted for 17 paise of every railway rupee spent.

As against this, a massive 65 paise of every rail rupee came from goods traffic earnings, with passenger earnings lagging behind at 28 paise for every rupee earned.

Miscellaneous receipts accounted for three paise of every railway rupee earned whereas other coach earnings and sundry other earnings each contributed two paise to every railway rupee earned during the year under review.

Of every rupee earned by the railways in 1999-2000, lease charges consumed 8 paise, whereas dividend outgo by the railways accounted for 6 paise of every rail rupee earned during the year under review.

Another 5 paise of every rupee earned by the railways went towards depreciation reserve fund during 1999-2000 whereas miscellaneous expenses accounted for 7 paise of

every rail rupee.

Another 7 paise for every rupee earned was spent on storage.
