Rail Budget: 16 new inter-city trains to begin

Sixteen new inter-city trains called Jan Shatabdi Express will be introduced from this year, Railway Minister Nitish Kumar announced on Tuesday.

The trains are: Madgaon-Mumbai, Guwahati-Dimapur, Raigarh-Raipur-Durg, Ahmedabad-Bhuj, Tatanagar-Ranchi, Bangalore-Hubli, Ernakulam-Thiruvananthapuram, Kota-Nizamuddin, Bhubaneswar-Howrah, Dehradun-New Delhi, Howrah-Malda Town, Varanasi-Lucknow, Chandigarh-New Delhi, Chennai Central-Vijayawada via Gudur, Habibganj-Jabalpur and Katihar-Patna.

  • The Railways will also introduce high-speed refrigerated parcel vans to transport perishable items.
  • 25 new express trains to be introduced.
  • Computer-based unreserved ticket system introduced to book tickets from anywhere.
  • Frequency of 13 trains, including Rajadhanis are to be increased.
  • Anti-collision device 'Raksha Kavach' developed to prevent collision between trains.
  • A new railway bridge to be built across the Brahmaputra.
  • Bottled 'Rail Neer' drinking water will be sold at all railway stations.
  • 150 more passenger reservation centres to be added to the existing 700.
