US duties hit Indian steel exports

Exports of steel products to the United States have declined sharply due to the imposition of anti-dumping and countervailing duties. Shipments of hot-rolled steel have virtually come to a halt.

Official sources said that imports of hot-rolled steel by the US had dropped by 91 per cent in the first half of 2001 and were almost non-existent now.

Similarly, imports of cut-to-length carbon steel plates by the US from India between 1998-2000 had dropped by a whopping 98 per cent.

The US government has so far initiated a total of five anti-dumping and anti-subsidy cases relating to Indian steel products.

US authorities have recently determined a preliminary dumping margin of between 7 per cent and 153 per cent on imports of cold-rolled steel products from India.
