Budget & Politics

Govt agrees to roll back foodgrain price-hikes
The rollback of wheat and rice price-hikes would be " very marginal" and not what the BJP-led coalition partners had actually demanded, a finance ministry official told rediff.com.

Budget Session of Parliament stormy
The opposition is determined to grill the government on price rise, reduction in subsidies on LPG, kerosene and 'weakening' of the public distribution system.

Sinha to consider NDA allies' demands
The finance minister said the sentiments of the coalition partners and Opposition for a rollback of PDS and fertiliser prices "will be kept in mind".

Tax proposals won't be rolled back: Sinha
The finance minister chided the industry leaders for demanding rollbacks of export earning tax and dividend tax while preaching political parties to accept food and fertiliser subsidies cut.

For the BJP and its allies to reach a meeting point on the issue of the proposed hike in prices of fertilisers and foodgrains, both sides would have to make partial climbdowns from their positions. Else, Sinha's Budget 2000 may never get Parliament's approval, say political leaders.

Congress to bring cut motion on subsidy issue
"Even a couple who are fourth grade employees are above the poverty line. But, in real terms, they are not rich. In my opinion, food subsidy should be given to them also," said A K Antony, former food minister.

Sinha open to 'review genuine shortcomings, problems and irritants' in Budget
''As far as the dividend tax is concerned, we feel it was necessary to impose this levy... Please live with it as it cannot be rolled back,'' the finance minister told the Indian industry.

Kerala flays Sinha, allocates Rs 390 million for food subsidy in its Budget
Kerala's finance minister Sivadasa Menon has said the Union Budget is lopsided and puts states at a disadvantage. "Hardly any sector had been given a boost. There is a 'regressive movement' towards a tax regime that preserves and protects the interests of a small fraction of the population that owns 80 per cent of the total wealth of the country."

Sinha rules out rollback of subsidies
"I consider it extremely unlikely," the finance minister said in a television interview. Cuts in subsidies, he said, was a well-considered opinion.

Demolishing the poor, sparing the rich
Yashwant Sinha should have left food subsidies untouched and focused on aggressive privatisation, downsizing of public sector units and desubsidisation of higher education,' says Dilip Thakore.

This isn't time for concessions to common man, says Sinha
Referring to the expenses of the Kargil 'war', the FM said in a post-Budget interview, ''This is the time for the people to stand up and willingly make sacrifices.''

Govt bit the bullet to curb fiscal deficit: Sinha defends Budget 2000
"The Budget should be appreciated since it has undertaken a major rationalisation of tax structure by doing away with various exemptions. The attitude of 'I'm special, I should not be taxed,' should be given up," the finance minister said.

Budget for development, says PM
But Vajpayee expressed concerned about the size of the fiscal deficit.

Steps taken to control fiscal deficit: Sinha
The finance minister also said the Budget has continued the economic reforms while directly dealing with poverty and unemployment.
