'Passenger fares may be revised later this year'

Railway Board Chairman Ashok Kumar on Monday said the possibility of a rise in railway passenger fares any time this fiscal year could not be ruled out.

Addressing the post-Railway Budget presentation press conference in New Delhi, Kumar said the passenger fares could be reviewed any time.

Asked whether the increase would be effected after the West Bengal assembly elections, Kumar said: ''I can't predict the future.''

He said this year the main thrust of the railway budget was the completion of existing projects.

Kumar said in order to generate revenues from non-traditional areas, the railways has decided to go in for a single window clearance for all projects including tourism packages, advertisements and catering.
