At 1005 EDT on September 11, the first of the two twin towers of the World Trade Centre collapsed in a gigantic and fearsome mushroom cloud of smoke, dust and debris. The streets of New York suddenly went dark. This tower, the south tower, crumbled one hour and 15 minutes after the first hijacked airliner tore into the twin skyscrapers.
