Over 250 Indians Victims of US Attacks

More than 250 Indians were among those feared killed, injured and missing following the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre.

The Indian Consul General in New York, Shashi Tripathi, said 37 injured Indians were being treated in various hospitals. But some community leaders put the figure at one hundred.

The consulate frequently sent out its representatives to various hospitals to check the lists of injured to locate the Indians.

Preliminary estimates said between 250 and 300 Indians were suspected killed, injured or missing.

Meanwhile, the police arrested one person for an attack on Gurdwara Richmod, during which rubber bullets were fired.

The arrest was made when the group came for a second attack.

As anger against Arabs mounted in the United States with reports linking Osama bin Laden to the terror attacks and television images showing Palestinian celebrations, Tripathi advised Indians to be more careful.

The fear was that anyone looking like an Arab might become the target of ire by some groups.

Tripathi said Indian women could wear bindi and men could carry some identification, which could be used in times of need.

But several Islamic organisation advised Muslims, especially women who wear burqa, to stay at home for a few days.
