Indian held in US after 9/11 to be released soon

An Indian who was held following the September 11 attacks in the United States would be released soon, as he was sentenced to 'time served' on Thursday.

Federal Bureau of Investigation officials had arrested Mohammed Jaweed Azmath and Ayub Ali Khan alias Syed Gul Mohammed Shah on an Amtrak train heading for San Antonio, Texas, on September 12.

On checking their luggage, box cutters similar to those used by the perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks were found, plus $5,500.

Investigations showed that they were not connected to the attacks, but only involved in a credit card fraud scheme. However, they were only charged in December 2001.

In June 2002, Azmath pleaded guilty to that charge.

US District Court Judge Shira Sheindlin said on Wednesday that the nine months, which Azmath spent in jail while the authorities probed whether he was involved in the terror attacks, was sufficient sentence.

Azmath was ordered to pay back $76,000 in restitution for the money he had stolen thorough his credit card scheme.

Anthony Ricco, his lawyer, said he would be transferred to US immigration officials' custody and then be deported to India by the end of September.
