'I was rejected straightaway as the director thought that I looked too young for the role'

Unlike most heroines in Malayalam, you are continuing your career in films after marriage?

When someone is working in a company, they take leave, get married and rejoin. How can movies be different? Now we are settled in the US and my husband is perfectly okay with my shooting schedules.

He had supported me in this decision to continue acting. Of course, I would like to spend quality time with my family and I have successfully balanced both until now.

I had managed studies and acting, even during my college days. Also, I have plans to start a business of my own now.

How did Hariharan's Pazhassi Raja happen?

After completing Varalaru in Tamil, I got a call from the makers of Pazhassi Raja. Frankly, I had no clue about the role or even about the historical importance of the character. I was rejected straightaway as the director thought that I looked too young for the role. Naturally I was disappointed.

Then I gave him the DVD of Varalaru, in which I have played a queen. He saw it and was impressed. We had a costume trial after which I was selected. The director told me that he had considered several heroines for the role. I believe that I have done justice to my character.
